Incision

While you are awake and pain-free (using local anesthesia), and just before the baby is born, your obstetrician makes an incision at the bottom of the vaginal opening. This enlarges the vaginal opening while the baby's head is being delivered, to prevent vaginal tears. The incision is then stitched (sutured) closed after the baby and placenta are delivered.
