While you are deep asleep and pain-free (under general anesthesia), your surgeon makes an incision across the abdomen, just above the pubic area. In order to tighten the abdominal muscles, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdominal wall; around the pubic area up to the rib cage; and around the umbilicus. The incision is then stitched (sutured) closed. Usually small flat tubes (drains) are inserted and used for a few days to allow fluid to drain out of the incisions. A firm elastic dressing is also applied to your abdomen.
