Most patients leave the hospital the day of surgery. The eyes and eyelids are covered with ointment and a bandage. They may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia wears off, but medication alleviates the discomfort. Keep the head elevated for several days, and use cold packs to reduce swelling and bruising. Eyedrops are recommended to reduce burning or itching of the eyes.
You should be able to see well after two to three days. Contact lenses should NOT be worn for at least two weeks, and may feel uncomfortable for a much longer period of time. Keep activities to a minimum for three to five days, and avoid strenuous activities that raise the blood pressure for about three weeks (such as lifting, bending, or playing rigorous sports).
The stitches are removed two to seven days after surgery. The amount of bruising depends upon the level of surgery performed, and your general health. The bruising usually reaches its peak during the first week, and lasts from two to four weeks. You may notice increased tears, increased sensitivity to light and wind, and temporary vision changes (such as blurring or double vision) for the first few weeks.
