Surgery is recommended for children who are born with exposed and everted (exstrophied) bladders. Bladder exstrophy occurs when the anterior wall of the bladder and the pelvis bones develop abnormally. The wall of the bladder is thus exposed on the abdominal wall. This congenital abnormality is also associated with a separation of the pubic bones. There are different degrees of severity. In some cases, the bladder is repaired and will function properly; in severe cases, such as bladder exstrophy, the bladder cannot be repaired completely.
Surgery is performed to:- prevent infection that could decrease kidney function
- allow the child to develop normal urinary control
- improve the child's physical appearance
- avoid future problems with sexual function
