Surgical correction of bladder exstrophy often requires more than one operation. The first operation usually involves the repair of the bladder, as well as the return of the bladder to its normal intra-abdominal location. Depending on the magnitude of the defect, bladder repair itself may require more than one operation.
Because the pelvic bones are separated, the child also needs to have the pelvic bones surgically attached to each other. This surgery is performed first, or may be delayed for weeks or months.
