The spine is made up of bones (vertebrae) that are separated by soft cushions (intervertebral discs). These discs act as cushions between the vertebrae. They absorb energy while the spinal column flexes, extends, and twists. Nerves from the spinal cord exit the spinal column between each vertebra.
