Spinal fusion is performed for:
  • abnormal curvature of the spine (scoliosis or kyphosis)
  • injury to the spinal vertebrae
  • protrusion of the cushioning disc between the vertebrae (slipped disc or herniated nucleus pulposus)
  • infections or tumors that weaken the spine
