Dilatation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure that scrapes and collects the tissue (endometrium) from inside of the uterus.
D&C (uterine scraping) is performed to: - diagnose conditions using collected tissue samples (biopsies)
- treat irregular bleeding (bleeding between periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, or bleeding after intercourse)
- remove fetal or placental tissue ( used for some elective or therapeutic abortions, and to remove any remaining tissue after a miscarriage)
- investigate infertility
- remove uterine fibroids
- treat uterine cancer (early diagnosis)
- treat cervical cancer (early diagnosis)
- treat thickening of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia )
- remove an embedded IUD (intrauterine device)
