    (Carum carvi) is the fruit of a biennial herb of the carrot family. Its
    oil is obtained by distillation and used in medicine as an aromatic,
    a stimulant and a carminative. It is useful as an anaesthetic for
    toothache (Place a piece of cotton soaked in the oil into the cavity
    area). A powder of the seed can be put into a poultice* for blows and
    bruises. Also used in various sachets.
