Characteristics: Fine, ferny leaves and daisylike flowers on stems about 24 inches high. Apple-scented flowers can be used in tea. The plants fade quickly after flowering.

Growing Information: Plant in full sun and well-drained soil of average fertility. Replant in midsummer for second harvest.

Propagation: Sow annual chamomile in early spring and again in summer for a succession of harvests. It may self-sow once started.

Harvesting and Using: Harvest flowers to use fresh or dried in teas. If you're allergic to ragweed, may cause an allergic reaction. Use chamomile in potpourri. Flowers are used to highlight blonde hair.

Related Herbs: English or Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) has a more pungent aroma and is grown primarily as a scented ground cover. Also available as double-flowered 'Flore Plena' or flower-free 'Treneague'.
