NEW YORK, Mar 07 (Reuters Health) - About 180,000 multi-purpose lighters are being recalled due to fears they could cause fires and burn injuries, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Tuesday.

To date, manufacturer Double L Inc. has received five reports of burn injuries caused by excessive bursts of flame.

The recalled lighters--used to light barbecue grills, camp fires and fireplaces--are about 10 inches long with a red plastic trigger and on/off switch and a silver-colored metal barrel. They also have a black handle with a label that reads, "DANGER: EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE."

The lighters were sold for $1 to $2 at Joann Stores, Family Dollar Stores, Bill Dollar Stores, and Hancock Fabrics stores throughout the country from December 1998 through December 1999.

"Consumers should stop using the lighters immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund," CPSC safety experts advise.

For more information, contact Double L Inc. toll-free at (800) 253-1399 weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM ET.
