[This is NOT a plan for the advent of martial law.] Plan to live with the barest necessities for survival. Remember that there will probably be no electricity, and transportation of food and basic needs will fail. There will be no gasoline. Crop failures will be widespread. There will probably be a lot of smoke and volcanic ash in the air. 1. Heating of homes and tents will be difficult because of severe fuel shortages. Have plenty of warm, layered clothing, sweaters, lined coats and underwear, waterproof shoes, wool socks, plenty of warm blankets, and sleeping bags. Gloves, lined. Temperatures may drop as low as 90-100 degrees below zero! Sources of high fat foods for high energy and to maintain body heat will be needed in case of below-arctic temperatures. Remember, "high cholesterol" is not an important issue in arctic survival. 2. Stockpile needed life-sustaining medicines. Buy a standard first aid kit with splints and bandages, antibiotic ointments, antihistamines for allergy. Tylenol, 3. Stored whole grains, rolled cereals, brown rice, whole wheat flour, powdered eggs, dry navy beans, black beans, soy beans (for protein). Vitamins B-complex, vitamin. C, iron tablets for women. 4. Canned meats, vegetables, fruits. (Keep cans dry or they will rust open) Hard ham--double cured. Bacon, beef jerky, sugar ,salt, baking powder, yeast, laundry soap for hand washing clothes. 5. Small camp stove with gas or butane for cooking food. Extra fuel if stored safely. If you live in the rural areas, a wood stove is a must, along with cut wood for fuel. 6. Guns and ammunition. .22 rifles for small game. Shotguns for ducks and game birds. Also hand guns for self defense. There may be marauding bands of criminals who will seek to rob you or kill you and your family for what you have. 7. Hatchets, axes, knives, and household tools. Candles, matches, flashlights with extra batteries. 8. Bleach for sterilizing drinking water, 16 drops per gallon; ( boil it for at least 60 minutes to kill parasites such as cryptosporidium, which comes from cow and horse droppings). When camping in the Rocky Mountains be sure to wet down the ground for several yards around the camp in order to avoid inhaling dust containing dried mouse droppings, which may contain Hantavirus. Infection is almost always fatal. Avoid skinning and eating rabbits and rodents which are usually carriers of disease such as plague and tuleremia. 9. Powerful battery operated two-way radio to keep in touch with the world. May be needed for distress calls. 10. Respirator masks, miner type, with filters if there is heavy volcanic dust, smoke, in the air, or Israeli gas masks for biological or chemical agents. 11. Horses, wagons, bicycles for transportation, when gasoline and diesel fuel have run out. 12. Nuclear fallout shelters may be needed in areas near military installations and large cities. According to the scientists, that is. I'll look for the sources so I can cite them for future reference. Carl Dan wrote: > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Chris Young" > To: > > 1. As the Mormons say, "Store what you eat, eat what you store". At this point in time, I don't store any raw grain. I had ordered a mill online - but the company had changed hands, led to a several month fiasco trying to get the new owners to ship my mill, or refund the money. My wife was looking forward to grinding her own wheat - she already enjoys making her own pasta and bread. Priorities have since changed - sinking my 'survival budget' into a trailer. Not as practical, but more fun. The major benefit of raw grain is shelf life - for the time being, I'll live with the shorter shelf life of flour.
