There are some companies that make mill grinders (that clamp on the edge of the table) to make wheat into flour. I know that that turning wheat into flour takes a different kind of grinder, something on the edge of my mind says "flour mill". Best to practice with it while the power is still on, and you can still eat your regular food. When the lights go out, you get hungry in a hurry. Having said that, I've got a couple cans of whole wheat, and I've not used it for anything. So I'm as bad as the rest of the world. Christopher A. Young P.O. My wife picked up a little wheat mill at a garage sale the other day. It's 120VAC, but only draws 150w so it'll run off our inverter. Anyway, that's our solution to the problem. We've also got a hand crank mill from Emergency Essentials, bought back in 1999 (gee, wonder what I was thinking of?) The thought also crosses my mind that a lot of people have marble rolling pins and the marble baking tray thing (my wife knows the real name for this, but if you have one you know what I'm talking about. The marble slab thing you're supposed to put in the fridge so dough doesn't stick to it?) The marble rolling pin and slab should remain stable enough that bits of rock don't go in the grain... or am I thinking wrong here? I really liked the post about the two metal pipes someone came up with, I think that's the best idea so far. You can't be hitting things with any of that marble stuff or it breaks. It is not nearly as hard as you might think. The reason I mention the pipe thing for pounding flour is from another list I was on before, and that is from natives somewhere I saw on tv that use large and small bamboo tubes for the same thing. From: "Dan" Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 09:14:27 -0400 -------- While researching this, I found a FEMA pamphlet titled "Emergency Food and Water Supplies: http://www.fema.gov/library/emfdwtr.htm "To avoid serious digestive problems, you'll need to grind the corn and wheat into flour and cook them, as well as boil the beans, before eating. Many health food stores sell hand-cranked grain mills or can tell you where you can get one. Make sure you buy one that can grind corn. If you are caught without a mill, you can grind your grain by filling a large can with whole grain one inch deep, holding the can on the ground between your feet and pounding the grain with a pipe." An even more interesting link is "Nuclear War Survival Slills" http://www.ki4u.com/free_book/s60p648.htm In chapter 9, page 77 : "Whole-kernel grains or soybeans cannot be eaten in sufficient quantities to maintain vigor and health if merely boiled or parched. A little boiled whole-kernel wheat is a pleasantly chewy breakfast cereal, but experimenters at Oak Ridge got sore tongues and very loose bowels when they tried to eat enough boiled whole-kernel wheat to supply even half of their daily energy needs. Some pioneers, however, ate large quantities of whole-kernel wheat without harmful results after boiling and simmering it for many hours. Even the most primitive peoples who subsist primarily on grains grind or pound them into a meal or paste before cooking. (Rice is the only important exception.) Few Americans know how to process whole-kernel grains and soybeans (our largest food reserves) into meal. This ignorance could be fatal to survivors of a nuclear attack." Also has instructions for a more efficient improvised mill.
