Choking (for CONSCIOUS adult or child over 1 year)
Alternative names:
The first aid procedure for choking is also referred to
as the Heimlich maneuver or abdominal thrusts.
Symptoms:
- Gagging
- Grabbing the throat with the hand (the universal sign
for choking)
- Weak, ineffective coughing;
noisy breathing; high-pitched crowing sounds
- Convulsions or loss
of consciousness (due to lack of oxygen) can develop
- Difficulty speaking or inability to speak
