Definition:
A respiratory syndrome that may be caused by various agents and that does not follow the usual signs and symptoms of pneumonia.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
Atypical pneumonia is characterized by general symptoms rather than by respiratory symptoms. Atypical pneumonia may be caused by the following bacterial or viral organisms: Mycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza A and B, adenovirus, Legionella, and Chlamydia. Lowered resistance to infection by recent or chronic illness and smoking are predisposing factors.
