Cardiogenic shock

Definition:

A form of shock caused when the heart is unable to supply enough blood to the body; the primary cause of the shock is within the heart itself.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

Shock is caused whenever the heart is unable to pump enough blood for the needs of the body. Cardiogenic shock can result from disorders of the heart muscle, the valves, or the heart's electrical conduction system. Some of the related disorders include acute MI, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, rupture of the heart, arrhythmias, and valve disorders (especially regurgitations).
