Drug-induced hypoglycemia

Definition:
A decrease in the blood sugar caused by a drug or medication.
- Insulin causes a decrease in the blood sugar.
- Oral antidiabetic agents are a class of drugs capable of lowering blood sugar to normal levels. Excessive dosages may cause hypoglycemia.
- Alcohol (which is technically a drug) lowers blood sugar. Adults tolerate the decrease in alcohol induced blood sugar well but children may become symptomatic and deaths from alcohol induced hypoglycemia have been reported in children.
