Noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)

Alternative names:

Symptoms:

• increased thirst
• increased urination
• weight loss in despite increased appetite
• fatigue
• nausea
• vomiting
• frequent infections including bladder, vaginal, skin
• blurred vision
• Erectile dysfunctionm in men

Note: There may be no symptoms or symptoms develop slowly.

Signs and tests:

Type II diabetes is diagnosed when:

• A urinalysis shows glucose (and sometimes ketone bodies) in the urine.
• A fasting blood glucose is above 140 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter).
• A random glucose is above 200 mg/dl.
• A glycosylated hemoglobin (Hb A1c) level is elevated.
• An insulin test may be performed to determine if the body is producing any insulin.
