Prostate cancer

Alternative names:

cancer of the prostate

Prevention:

There is no manner to prevent prostate cancer. However, there are screening modalities that allow for the detection of cancer at an earlier and more curable stage. The modality and frequency of screening is controversial. Screening mechanisms include Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) and PSA. Because cancer is detected at such an early stage, many cancers that would never have been detected are detected and thus, people who would never have been treated without screening are treated in spite of the fact that they would have likely died of another cause even without it ever being discovered. This could result in a lot of side effects that would never have been necessary. On the other hand, young people who would have otherwise died of metastatic disease are discovered early and cured. Thus the method, frequency and utility of screening are sources of controversy.

Every September, one week is set aside as Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. Several urology clinics across the country hold free prostate screening clinics that provide educational materials as well as free rectal exams and PSA blood testing. Contact a hospital or medical center in your area for information on their program for Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. Additionally, information may be obtained by contacting your local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
