Paget's disease

Alternative names:

osteitis deformans

Treatment:

Localized requires no treatment. Analgesics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) may be given for pain.

Orthopedic surgery may be required to correct a specific deformity.
Drug therapy is aimed at suppressing bone cellular activity and mineral changes that influence the disease process. Calcitonin is given to retard bone resorption and affects bone lesions. Mithramycin may be given to decrease serum calcium. These drugs may be given before surgery.

Expectations (prognosis):

Malignant changes of bone occur in 5% of people affected. The disease may remain localized and result in little deformity, or become widespread with skeletal deformity.

Complications:

Calling your health care provider:

Call for an appointment with your health care provider if symptoms of Paget's disease develop.
