Inflammed shoulder tendons

Overview   Symptoms   Treatment   Prevention

Rotator cuff tendonitis

Alternative names:

pitcher's shoulder; shoulder impingement syndrome; swimmer's shoulder; tennis shoulder

Treatment:

The injured shoulder should be rested. Intermittent ice packs applied to the shoulder will help reduce inflammation and pain. The uninjured shoulder muscles should be strengthened as long as the exercises can be done without pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed and will reduce pain and inflammation. If the rotator cuff has sustained a complete tear, or if the tendons have not healed in 1 year, surgery to stabilize the shoulder may be indicated.

Expectations (prognosis):

The probable outcome is good with treatment. A complete tear of the rotator cuff requires surgical repair.

Complications:

Calling your health care provider:

Call for an appointment with your health care provider if persistent arm pain occurs. Also call if symptoms do not improve with treatment.
