Prostatitis; non-bacterial
Definition:
An inflammation of the prostate gland that develops suddenly.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
Non-bacterial prostatitis is the most common type of prostatitis, and usually is caused by Chlamydia or ureaplasma organisms. It may associated with or follow urinary tract infection (cystitis), urethritis, or epididymitis. The disorder is discovered in 5 out of 10,000 outpatient visits. Increased risk is associated with men 20 to 35 years old, who have multiple sexual partners, and who do not practice safe sex behaviors.
