Overview

Congenital antithrombin III deficiency

Alternative names:

antithrombin III deficiency - congenital; deficiency of antithrombin III - congenital

Definition:

Antithrombin III is a protein which is active in the blood stream and removes thrombus (clots) which occur as a result of mild daily injury. Decreased levels of antithrombin III result in increased risk of clot formation that may damage any organ in which the thrombus develops. It is also more difficult to treat a clotting problem in individuals with this condition. Congenital antithrombin III deficiency is present from birth and is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.
