Acute HIV infection
Alternative names:
primary HIV infection; HIV seroconversion syndrome, acute
retroviral syndrome
Symptoms:
Note: At the time of diagnosis with the HIV
infection, many people have not experienced any symptoms.
Any of the following symptoms may occur:
Signs and tests:
- An HIV ELISA/Western
blot may show positive HIV antibody;
if negative, the test should be repeated in 3 months.
- An HIV RNA viral load is positive in patients with acute
HIV infection. The ELISA test is usually negative in the
first 2 to 3 weeks following infection.
- A CD4 count may show suppression of the immune system.
- A blood differential
may show abnormalities.
