Treatment:
Antibiotic therapy should be started as soon as possible. Penicillin, chloramphenicol, or ceftriaxone are some medications that are used. Sometimes systemic corticosteroids may be used.
Expectations (prognosis):
With early treatment, the outcome is usually good.

Call your health care provider if a young child has persistent unexplained fever, irritability, feeding difficulties, or high pitched cry. Meningitis can become a life-threatening illness!
