Meningitis; H. influenza:

H. influenza meningitis, H. flu meningitis.

Prevention:

Prior to the advent of Hib vaccine there was little available for the general public for prevention of H. flu meningitis. For protection of the general public (infant and early childhood):

  • Several types of Hemophilus T SIZE=2>influenza vaccine are available for children that are at least two months old. Your physician may use one of several types. The immunization schedule may vary depending on the type used. Hib immunizations for infants and children is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Institute of Health and many other health agencies.

For prevention following exposure to known cases of H. flu meningitis or infection:

  • It is recommended that all family contacts of individuals with this type of meningitis begin chemoprophylaxis (drug therapy for prevention) as soon as possible. The drug of choice is T SIZE=2>rifampin. Ask your health care provider about it during the initial diagnostic visit.
