Sleep patterns in the young and aged
Short sleep

Overview

Natural short sleeper

Alternative names:

sleep - natural short sleeper

Definition:

An individual who requires less than the generally considered normal amount of sleep (8 to 10 hours) and is able to function normally.

Information:

Although there is a broad range in the amount of time individuals need to sleep, the typical person requires an average of 7 to 10 hours each night. We all know people who are able to function well on much less sleep. Thomas Edison, for one, is reputed to have required very little sleep. Some of these "short sleepers" compensate by napping, but others just require less sleep. This is just one example of the variations that occur among normal individuals. If you are a "natural short sleeper," who is functioning effectively during the day on less than 7 hours of sleep, there is no need to consult a physician.
