Nursemaid's elbow

Alternative names:

dislocated elbow in children; pulled elbow

Treatment:

The dislocation is reduced by flexing the elbow to 90 degrees and, with the palm up, rotating the forearm outward away from the body. Note: THIS MUST BE DONE BY THE HEALTH CARE PROVIDER.

Expectations (prognosis):

If a nursemaid's elbow remains unreduced it will result in permanent inability to fully extend the elbow.

Complications:

  • permanent disability

Calling your health care provider:

Call your health car provider if you suspect your child has a dislocated elbow or refuses to use an arm.
