Geographic tongue

Alternative names:

benign migratory glossitis; glossitis areata migrans

Symptoms:

• map-like appearance to the surface of the tongue
• patches and lesions on the tongue
  • beefy red
  • smooth
  • sore and burning pain (in some cases)
  • location changing from day to day

Signs and tests:

Examination of the tongue is usually sufficient to make the diagnosis. No tests are usually necessary.
