Torn lateral collateral ligament
Knee arthroscopy

Overview

Lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury

Alternative names:

injury - knee - LCL; injury - lateral collateral ligament; injury - LCL; knee injury - lateral collateral ligament

Definition:

An injury to the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), a ligament extending from the top-outside surface of the fibula to the bottom-outside surface of the femur. The ligament prevents the knee joint from side-to-side (lateral) instability. Sports injuries that produce LCL tears in children are also very likely to produce breaks (called epiphyseal fractures) in the "growing part" of the thigh bone (femur) or shin bone (tibia).
