Lymphatic obstruction
Alternative names:
lymphedema
Definition:
Lymphatic obstruction is blockage of the lymph vessels. Lymphedema is a swelling that can occur because of a lymphatic obstruction.
Lymph vessels contain valve-like veins allowing for a one-direction flow. Lymphatic vessels return fluid collected from the tissues to the bloodstream. When the lymphatic vessels are blocked, the fluid remains in the tissues, causing swelling (edema). Lymph plays an important part in the immune system fighting infections and the invasion of foreign bodies.
