Bunions

Alternative names:

hallux valgus

Definition:

The result of inflammation and thickening of the bursa of the joint at the base of the great toe, causing an outward projection of the joint with inward turning of the toe.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

The cause of a bunion may be hereditary but it is more often acquired from prolonged pressure on the foot caused from narrow- toed, high-heeled shoes that compress the toe, and cause degenerative arthritis. The condition may become very painful as the bursa, a sac of fluid at the joint, becomes inflamed. Bony enlargement may occur. The condition occurs more frequently in women.
