Pes planus

Alternative names:

flat feet, fallen arches; pes planovalgus; pronation of feet

Treatment:

Simple flat foot and pronation are not usually treated. If pain due to flat feet is suspected, an orthotic (arch preserving insert in the shoe) bring relief. Flat footedness is not correctable. With the increased interest in running, many shoe stores carry shoes for normal feet and pronated feet. The shoes designed for pronated feet make long distance running easier and less tiring as they correct for the positional abnormality.

Expectations (prognosis):

Flat feet and pronation are not expected to cause any significant problems.

Complications:

Nonflexible flat feet may be associated with other orthopedic problems or conditions.

Calling your health care provider:

Call your health care provider if you experience persistent pain in your feet or your child complains of foot pain or lower leg pain.
