Infant botulism
Treatment:
Treatment is supportive and may include keeping the airway clear, observing for respiratory difficulty and ensuring addequate nutrition.. If respiratory distress develops, respiratory support is indicated. Antibiotics do not appear to increase the rate of improvement, and antitoxin has not been of demonstrated value.
Expectations (prognosis):
Full recovery is expected. However, sudden death has been reported in those cases with rapid onset.
Complications:
Respiratory insufficiency can develop, requiring assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation).
