Spasmus nutans

Definition:

Spasmus nutans is a form of acquired nystagmus.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

Spasmus nutans occurs in a triad of symptoms which include horizontal or pendular nystagmus (fine rapid jerking of the eyes back and forth from side to side), head nodding and head tilting.

Spasmus nutans can occur as a self-limiting, spontaneously resolving condition which last several months to years or it may be associated with other causative conditions. Symptoms of spasmus nutans may be produced by optic gliomas as well as other brain tumors.
