Vaginismus

Alternative names:

unconsummated marriage

Symptoms:

Vaginal tightness, or difficulty or inability to allow penetration for intercourse is the primary symptom.

Signs and tests:

A gynecological examination is necessary to confirm the diagnosis of vaginismus. The health care provider must note whether there is an involuntary muscle contraction when fingers are inserted into the vagina. If a woman is unable to use tampons because of tightness, this may provide a suggestive indication of the presence of vaginismus.
