Retroversion of the uterus
Alternative names:
malposition of the uterus; tipped uterus; uterus retroversion
Treatment:
Treatment is not necessary unless symptoms are noted and are bothersome. In this case, a vaginal pessary may provide some relief.
Expectations (prognosis):
Usually this condition does not cause problems. Any symptoms that do occur can usually be relieved satisfactorily by the physician.
Complications:
A retroverted uterus may inhibit a woman's ability to become pregnant. However, you should never assume this to be true and rely on it as a form of birth control.
Malposition of the uterus may be caused by endometriosis, salpingitis, or pressure from a growing tumor. These conditions must be ruled out in the symptomatic patient.
Calling your health care provider:
Call your health care provider if pelvic discomfort, abnormal bleeding, or other symptoms of this disorder persist; or if new symptoms develop.
