Brief reactive psychosis

Treatment:

Antipsychotic drugs are usually prescribed to decrease or eliminate the psychotic symptoms and bizarre behavior. Thorazine and Haldol are two examples of antipsychotic medications.

Psychotherapy may help the person cope with the emotional stress that triggered the psychosis.

Expectations (prognosis):

Symptoms usually disappear in 1 week with no residual deficit. The disorder is associated with a good outcome. Repeat episodes may occur as a response to stress.

Complications:

Repeat episodes may occur as a response to stress.
