Maternal deprivation syndrome
Alternative names:
nonorganic failure to thrive
Treatment:
Many programs are available for young parents, single parents, and parents having problems. Referrals should be made to appropriate programs. Helping extended family members recognize that a problem exists and recruiting their help will provide increased support for the mother and infant. The problem of an absent father may not have a solution but attempts should be made to rectify the situation.
Expectations (prognosis):
With adequate attention and care, full recovery is expected.
Complications:
Calling your health care provider:
Call for an appointment with your health care provider if your child does not seem to be growing or developing normally; also ask your health care provider's advice if you don't know how to care for your child.
