Retinopathy

Alternative names:

retinopathy of prematurity; retrolental fibroplasia; ROP

Symptoms:

Subtle retinal changes of ROP are visible only by ophthalmoscopic examination and cannot be seen by the parents. Results of severe ROP may produce some of the following signs:

• pupil, white spots (leukocoria)
• cataract (visible as clouding or whiteness in pupil)
• repetitive jerking of eyes (nystagmus)
• cross eyes (strabismus)
• lazy eye (amblyopia)
• near sighted (myopia)

Signs and tests:

• ophthalmoscopy
• slit lamp examination
