Glossopharyngeal neuralgia

Definition:

A condition of unknown cause marked by repeated episodes (lasting from a few seconds to minutes) of severe pain in the tongue, throat, middle ear, and tonsils. It occurs more frequently in people over 40 years old and in men more than in women. Attacks may be brought on by swallowing. Drug therapy is usually effective, but surgery may be needed to cut the involved nerve.
