Information:
A series of tests used to determine the intelligence of an individual in relation to other people the same age. Tests are specific to a particular culture, and do not reflect creativity or motor skill aptitude.

Classifications of IQ differ slightly between sources but can generally be classified as:

Above 140
Near genius or genius (1 out of 1000 individuals is considered extremely gifted. They may be able to do advanced math such as calculus or reading at a college level while still in elementary school. Children who score above 180 may have emotional and/or social problems.)

120-140
Very superior intelligence (advanced, 2 years or more above their grade in school, typically become leaders)

110-119
Superior intelligence (learns quickly)

90-109
Normal or average intelligence (the average is 100)

80-89
Slow learner (can function normally in society)

70-79
Borderline deficiency (potential educational problems)


Below 70 is considered mentally retarded

55-69
Educable (can learn to read and write) Most "mentally retarded" children fit into this category Can achieve 4th to 6th grade reading levels and function independently as adults.

40-54
Trainable (stress should be made toward self-care. Education may extend through 2nd grade levels. As adults, may function semi-independently.)

20-39
Custodial (will need to be cared for. Can learn simple conversation and minimal self-care.)

Below 20
Profoundly mentally retarded (may learn minimal language skills. Few can be toilet trained.)
