Question:
Is it wise for children today to get their tonsils removed?

Answer:
Unless a child has at least 4 or more episodes of significant tonsillitis a year, or if a child has enlarged tonsils that cause obstruction of swallowing or breathing, surgery for removal of the tonsils is not necessary. Inflammation of the tonsils can be successfully treated with antibiotics in most cases. There are always risks associated with surgery. However, if your child shows symptoms of loud snoring, restless sleep, poor growth, or mouth breathing accompanied by recurring tonsillitis, consult your physician about a tonsillectomy.
