Skills and physiologic growth markers regarded as having particular relevance for 2 month-old infants.

Growth and development of a 2-month-old:
Physical and motor:
  • weight gain between 1 lb. 4 oz. and 1 lb. 12 oz.
  • height gain of 2 inches
  • a 1-inch increase of head circumference
  • closure of posterior fontanel
  • doll's eye reflex, dance reflex, grasp reflex, and crawling reflex disappearing
  • hands are frequently open
  • less head lag
  • when on stomach, able to lift head almost 45 degrees
  • decreased flexion of extremities while on stomach
Sensory and cognitive:
  • searches to locate sounds
  • head turns from side to side with auditory stimulation at the level of the ear
  • beginning to visually fix on close objects
  • crying becomes differentiated
  • coos
  • vocal response to familiar voices
  • smiles in response to stimuli
Play:
  • toys and objects should be bright colors
  • the room should be bright with pictures and mirrors
  • use rattles and wind chimes
  • expose the baby to auditory stimuli outside those of the home
  • take the baby for rides in the car
