Question: Do fibroid tumors have to be removed?
Answer: If you do not have symptoms (such as excessive vaginal bleeding) and if the fibroid is not growing rapidly, then removal is probably not necessary. In many cases, treatment is not needed at all. (However, frequent pelvic exams are recommended to note any changes in the fibroid(s)). Hormonal treatment, with drugs such as Nafarelin and Leuporlide, may reduce the size of the fibroid(s), however, side effects can include menopausal symptoms and the tumor(s) will regrow if hormone therapy is discontinued. See fibroids and hysterectomy.
