Vital signs



Information:

Definition:
Signs of life. Physical signs such as heart beat, respiratory rate, temperature, and blood pressure that indicate that an individual is alive. Can be observed, measured, and monitored to assess level of physical functioning of an individual. Normal ranges of measurements of vital signs change with age and condition.

Normal values:
  • temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit):
    • children 0 to 3 months: 99.4
    • children 3 to 6 months: 99.5
    • children 6 months to 1 year: 99.7
    • children 1 year to 3 years: 99.0
    • children 3 years to 5 years: 98.6
    • children 5 years to 9 years: 98.3
    • children 9 years to 13 years: 98.0
    • children 13 year to adult: 97.8 - 99.1
  • pulse (heart rate) (beats per minute):
    • infants awake: 100 - 220
    • infants sleeping: 80-200
    • children 3 months to 2 years awake: 80-150
    • children 3 months to 2 years asleep: 70-120
    • children 2 to 10 years old awake: 70-120
    • children 2 to 10 years old asleep: 60-90
    • children 10 to adults awake: 55-90
    • children 10 to adults asleep: 50-90
