Definition: Sometimes called a pressure chamber, it is a system of delivering pressurized oxygen to an individual. It is used to help treat gas gangrene, decompression sickness (the bends), smoke inhalation, air embolism, and carbon monoxide poisoning. The pressure in the chamber is 1 1/2 to 3 times the normal atmospheric pressure.
Newborns are typically not introduced into hyperbaric chambers.
