Intrinsic factor
Information:
Definition: A chemical substance produced by the gastric mucosa (stomach) which is necessary for intestinal absorption of vitamin B12.
A deficiency in intrinsic factor can cause pernicious anemia. Deficiencies in intrinsic factor can be caused by surgical removal of the stomach or diseases that cause the gastric mucosa to shrink.
