Overview   Recommendations

Diet and activity

Alternative names:

hyperactivity and sugar

Recommendations:

There is no need to limit sugar, artificial sweeteners, color or flavors because of worry about hyperactivity. However, sugar remains the major culprit in tooth decay. High sugar foods tend to have fewer vitamins and minerals and may replace more nutritious foods.

Some people have allergies to specific dyes and flavors. If a child has a diagnosed allergy, consult a dietitian for specific food recommendations.

Children may react more to the environment than to a specific food. Sweet sugary foods are often eaten on special occasions. It is likely the special occasion rather than the food is the reason for the child's excitability. For instance, Halloween often excites children--with or without candy.
