Traveler's diarrhea diet
Definition:
Traveler's diarrhea describes diarrhea that frequently attacks those visiting unfamiliar areas --particularly in 'third world' or 'developing' countries. A variety of bacteria, viruses, and food toxins (poisons) can cause diarrhea.
Functions:
Diarrhea frequently causes illness and discomfort in people traveling to developing countries; it can also afflict those traveling to 'first world' countries. Bacteria and the toxins that cause diarrhea occur in areas with contaminated water supplies, poor sewage systems, and/or inadequate food handling or preparation techniques (including your own home). People living in these areas often don't get sick because their bodies have adapted.
Traveler's diarrhea is rarely life-threatening for adults. It is more serious in children, due to their increased nutrient needs for normal growth. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, and prolonged illness may lead to malnutrition. You can prevent traveler's diarrhea by avoiding water and food that may be contaminated.
